As a side note, archeological discoveries show that as early as 3000 BC, glass was being made in the Middle East. In those days, glass was a luxury that few could afford, this was due to the lack of equipment and technology that is required for producing glass in large volume.
In the 1st century BC, the “blowpipe” was invented in the Roman Empire giving birth to the process of “glass blowing” as we know it today. The invention of “glass blowing”, led to the manufacturing of glass at large scale .
Most commercial glass bottles today are made using a manufacturing process called “blow molding”. During the blow molding process, a mixture of silica sand, soda ash, limestone, and alumina-silicate, are melted at temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the mixture has been transformed from solid to molten glass, it is then blown in a balloon like shape and into a metal mold having the shape of a bottle. The mold is then cool down very slowly, this to avoid cracking the glass from an abrupt temperature change.
